Throughout American history, the media has consistently represented blacks as “inferior, stupid, comical, immoral, dishonest, violent, greedy, ignorant, and power-driven.” (Carter). Studies show that this degradation condition Americans to place less value on their lives, dreams, and rights of black people. Even the use of the word “black” is associated with evil, scary, and lessor. (Ouazad). In “Racism and the Media,” Kulaszewicz asked readers to imagine a news media that saturates society with visions of red apples. The media reports on these red apples every day during political debates. As a result, red apples are covered 300% more than other fruits. Also, red apples are depicted as being bruised and rotted. In conclusion, if viewers are asked how they view red apples, they will most likely assume that they spoil faster and damage more than other fruits.” Now, substitute red apples with black people, and you will understand how the media conditions society to view blacks as rotten and dangerous. We, the undersigned, demand that the media commit itself to the spread positive images of black men.
